Transcript | Geo Town [Georgetown?] 10th July 1820 Dear McDowell The Communication of the Town Council appeared in the Patriot of Friday Evg [Evening?] on Sunday Wilson call'd [called?] on Dr [Gourdin?] for [Francis?] letter to him & his answer = He was furnished with Copies - He said to [Gourdin?], that "he would be d---d if he did not draw Porter out", as he intended giving the whole tranaction [transaction?] to the Public - it will depend upon the tone & character of his publication, whither it will be a News Paper War, or a War of Powder & Lead = I am induced to believe that the last will be the resort as he said much [here?] in relation thereto, to G_____. I do not (at this time) approve of the measures taken in the first instance by Porter = He is now in for it & I am fully pusuaded [persuaded?] will have to fight his way out it - Porter is at the Island = & will today learn what has occur'd [occurred?] = I wish you would procure as soon as possible the Pistols from Capt [Captain?] Naux & send them to Dr [Gourdin?], by a trusty and faithfully & secretly put up & hold yourself in readiness to attend at a moment warning - You will probably hear from Porter himself - but I've thot [thought?] it advisable to inform you of the above _________ Yours truly - J M Cheesborou-- [Cheeseborough?] over Since writing the within - perhaps it would be best to send the Pistols, if an opportunity offers, to R A Taylor at No [?] & it is desirable that P should have your advice & instructions as to firing &c &c ___________ Davison McDowell Esq Peidee |
