Friday night
19? September

My dear Jim,
I will try to scribble a few lines by the light of a dull lamp, a sure sign
we are in the country. Nevertheless, it is none the less attractive. We
may not have all city conveniences, but we have nature's beauties to
see and admire. This mansion, built something after a castle style
and is a very antique design throughout, stands on a mountain
overlooking miles of beautiful country and surrounded by woods.
The air is so pure and nice. In fact, I am in love with the place.
We are amusing ourselves at night with cards playing 'Old
Maid'. We are here alone with the children. Mr. and Mrs. Mellon
went straight to Pittsburgh, so we expect to be home about the 25th
if not before. Then I will get that long promised vacation whenever
you get ready to come, and I will not let you push the baby for I am
going to steer clear of them while you are in town. You can see
them all, but I will be too glad to get away from them. We are both
looking for a little rest when things get straightened up a little, so
just write me a long letter soon and let me know when you can come
as you know Ellen and I will be looking forward to arranging our
time. She will be so glad to see you.
After all we are not leaving our nice old house at Bayard Street.
The one we were to have gone into was sold or had an offer of sale
in the meantime, and I am so glad.
Well, now, I must put up for the light is getting very dull, so
excuse all blots etc. and write as soon as you can. Give my kind regards to your aunt and sister and hurry up before Jack Frost makes
his appearance, for it feels pretty much like him tonight. Pittsburgh
looks cold at all times but much more so when covered with snow
and smoke. I know you will be disappointed for I was very much so
till I got accustomed to it. Pittsburgh is like the people there. They
grow on you. It also has to grow, but you will soon see all.
So now good night and am expecting answer real soon.
As ever, Annie
