| Transcript | Mount Melleray February 13, 1866 My Dear Brother, I received your note of Sunday evening which gave me for the second time tidings of the death of my sister Mary. I was sorry to hear of it but we must be resigned to God's will. Nature compels people sometimes be to very sorry at the death of relatives and sometimes perhaps too sorry. I hope you won't be so foolish as to be one of the latter class. Never let trouble take the least hold of you. Always offer your crosses and trials to God and pray for grace to bear them with patience, resignation, and fortitude. Pray fervently for her whom God was pleased to call out of life. And leave trouble to such as has no expectation of any future happiness. Don't be too much alarmed. God is infinitely good, and I hope He has called her in the best time. Let it be a warning to us all to be prepared. And the only way to be prepared is to be always preparing. Don't fret neither for my Mother. She'll with God's assistance and the help of our prayers brave all troubles that’re assailing her. I wrote a few lines of consolation to her. I am glad to find that you're so happy and contented. Thank God for that also and beg his grace to know and do in all things His blessed will. Always be obedient to your Superiors and attentive to whatever business you're put to do. My Dear Brother, I'm greatly delighted at the kindness of your Superior on this occasion. I must tell you also that the Abbot will himself celebrate mass for her. And special prayers will be offered for her also by the whole Community. And may the Lord hear all our prayers and have mercy on her soul. Amen. I am very well thank God and very happy and work at the shoemaking trade. I will always continue to pray for you, and bear you with patience the little trial you have met with. Bend your head under the hand of Jesus for its heaviest pressure is but a pledge of love. I conclude by remaining my dear brother, yours affectionately |
