My Dear Valne
I hope you got home safe and sound to the Old woman and papooses. I am in a hurry and must
cut my letter short. I was informed the Mr Jas. Davidson has accused you in presence of Squire
Doran of informing me of himself eating Meat at Said Doran’s place on a Friday in lent, and that
he, Davidson, held my letter stating your disposition of the Story to me. I deny that he holds a
letter of mine on that or any other subject since I came to Miramichi and I suppose I need not
tell you, that I never wrote to him from Kilkenny. More I positively assert, that I never spoke to
Davidson or any other person who could tell him, that you were his accuser. I could not do so
without calumniating you in the most wicked way. I heard of his exploits in this respect before I
ever knew you. I felt toubled regarding this infamous lie, and I wished to give you as early an
opportunity of justifying yourself in Mr. Dorans presence by this document as possible. It is the
cause of why I trouble your busy Moments at present. No accts from the Bishop since I saw you.
If he does not come before long I will start for your quarters. Present my dearest regard to Ban
a thee and the children.

remain my dear Val.
Your own [granbane] boy
