| Transcript | Daniel Kent, West Bradford Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, to William and Ann Kent, St. John’s Gate, Limerick,20 May 1786 W Bradford In Pennsylvania 1786 America 5th Mo 20th Dr Parents Imake bold to trouble you with these lines In hopes they Will find you and the family In A State of Health Eaqual To my Desires, I wrote to you Before this the 11th of the11 <th> Month 1785 In which Igave you an Account of my Passage & Settlement here But Got no Answer, However Iwait Impatiently for it, But least you have Recd my letter I shall Send you Some Account In this, Iwrote to you Before I left Cork of my Intention of Going to Dublin And Set of<f> In A Couple of Days After. When I Got As far as Clonmell Iwas much fatagued with the Walk And was Resolved to go to Waterford by Water Which I did & found Thomas Quin Cutler At Work there But the trade Being Bad there Icould Get no Work. Iheard that there was A Vessel there Ready to Sail for this Continent freighted With Passengers On Which Iwent On Board Being Seventh <day> Afternoon And We weighed Anchor first day Being the 23rd of the 5th Month Ihave nothing Remarkable to Relate Concerning Our Passage but that we had some Bad Weather In which Our Bowsprit was Sprung & Our foremast Nearly taken Away, We Cast Anchor Near Philadelp<h>ia The 26th of the 7th Month & lay there four weeks During which time Most of Our Company was taken Away. we then Went Up the Country (being About 20 In Number) towards this place (the Mate of the Vessel Being withus) Where I found Such Aman as I wished for, Whom Iam to Serve three years from the time the Vessel Cast Anchor Here, His Name is Joseph Hawley By Profession A Quaker & Occupation Afarmer & has a large Plantation There is not Many In these parts of my Profession. However I attend Quaker Meetings Mostly once A week And Seem to Like the Way of Silent Worship Very Well, You need not Be uneasy At my Situation for I Am not I am Quite Contented My Business Is of little Use here, Blacksmiths, Carpenters Shoemakers, Bricklayers, & taylors Are the Chief trades here. But there is Enough of Each trade here Already, |
