| Transcript | James and Hannah Crockett, Union Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, to George Crockett, Sr., Drumnashear, Killea Parish, County Donegal, 14 January 1822 Union January 14th 1822 Dear Father, it is a long time since I had the plashure of writing or hearing from you, which you no dout will think the same I must confes I have been negl<ec>tfull about riting nor can I Make aney excuse for my self, thairfore I think it better to confess my falts than smuther the truth I had aletter from Brother George he let me know that you had agreat desire to hear from me and how I was coming on shall satisfy you as far as I can about twelve year ago I bought alot of endevor to land the place I now live it was wild land what I mean by wild land is oncultiveted land the lot containd 109 acres I gave 2 Dollars per acre, it lookt a wild looking place to get aliving as the<re> were nothing but trees and bushes to be seen, I began to doubt whither I could get aliving of the land or not as I was onaquented with the method of cleering land, I thot it would not doo to stand and look at them I went to woork with my ax and grubing hoe, I soon got down as many logs as laid up my house, the<y> wer laid up horizantly in pers the roof made of shingls split out of wood and naild to the lath, I went on verry well for too or three years till it was rumord a bout that my title would bee disputed I did not belive it as I did not wish to but I soon found it to bee true, the sherrif made me <a> viset and served me with an Ejectment by A Mr Bidle he said the rite was in him and not in me I said I would stand him a trial for it I went to Wilksbree the county town where our corts holds and employd two la<w>yers to carry it on for me, Mr Bidle did not come forward to have it brought on it lay still for five years although I wisht to have it tryd as thair is no feeling so painfull as suspence when the result is to determin a mans all whither it is lost or gaind I got an ordor out at coart to have it brought to tryal the nixt coart it was brought on and desidet in my fevor and left Mr Bidle A hansum bill of cost to pay, my layers beheved with great faith and libarality to me Mr Mallery in purticylar advanced his own money and waited on me til I could replece it I now begin to feel better since I gaind the land I have about acres cleerd and I am now going to tell what you will s<c>arce give me credet for, that is I have not hyred but thre<e> mo<n>ths woork on the place I done all my own woork I hav built a lerge Barn feet by that I hyred all done if my Barn is large my house is small I have now got thrue with the historical part of my letter, I must now give you som acount of my Famely affairs have got one Son and no Daughters my son is six years old avery fine boy his name is George Alaxandor Cro<ckett> he and his Mother desires to be remem<bered> to you, when you write to me derect your letter to James Crockett Union care of Mr Jarius Herrison Huntiongton Luzerne County Pennsylvania I wish to be remembert to all my Brothers and Sistors and all the rest of my frends I remain your very affectionete son James Crocket Honnored Sir after presenting you my humble dutys I request you to write to us and let me know if my aunt MCarten is still alive Hannah Crocket |
