Transcript | [Letter 2] [Page 5] Essex Feb 3rd 97 Dear Father & Mother In answer to your letter which I received today noon I am pleased to know that you are all in very good health although surrounded I suppose by those who are less endowed by this respect. I am also sorry to know that so many people are going away to thir [their?] long resting place. It seems a few years makes great changes but I suppose if one was there alway [sic] they would not notice the change as much however we have not the regulating of this, [sic] As I have been in the habit of leaving your letters unanswered for a few days sometimes more I thought I would reverse the order this time so I answer right away [Page 6] I am not feeling extra well this last day or two. I was at Woodslee Sunday and I had an earache On Saturday night which I have not had since one time in harvest when moving that field in front of the house I don’t know how many. Comming [coming?] up on Monday morning (walking) I got a cold so I had a kind of headache [since?] though not enough to keep me from school. Today it has almost got better. The cold is about same as when I wrote before. I attended county L.O [Loyal Orange?] Lodge in this town on Tuesday Fb [Feb?] 2nd There was quite a lot business to be done. This Co [county?] & adjoining Co’s [counties?] [Kent?] [Elgin?] celebrate th [the?] comming [coming?] 12 at [Ridgewin?] a place half way between here and St Thomas I will send You a paper. I was elected 1st Deputy Co Lecturer [Page 7] that is [beginning?] & closing of Co Lodge. I wish you would send me last Co [county?] report if you have one & can do it. I received a Belfast paper the other day. Quite a lot of news in it. I send you in this a flower which they call the shamrock. I want you to send me a real shamrock [for?] I have it here at Patricks day, also to send a daffodil in a news paper [newspaper?] as soon as they are in bloom also a description of how it flowers & how long what time. This print came in class in a poem to Daffodils by [Hurich?] I think so I want to know all about it. Dont forget to send [last?] one, I see by John [sic] letter that they had another of those third class entertainments at plumbridge [Page 8] John says he has stopped going to school well his writing or composing does not indicate that he is entitled to graduate He should be a little more careful in writing and in grammar get to understand [sic] the difference "the" and "they" article & pronoun" us and we look up when to use one and when to use the other I am not saying this to find fault but to help you I see other letters with faults as well as yours but you are a school boy you know However don't forget to write again. What is the matter with Willie John? I am waiting for that letter of his. Have him write to me no matter what he says This is all I have to say at present Yours James Alex Smyth |
