Transcript | [Letter 2] [Page 5] Castledamph June 24th 1897 Dear Brother We received your last letter on the 22nd. glad to know that you are enjoying good health. and we hope that you will take courage when you are at those two subjects that you are so afraid of. perhaps you will do well in those two and miss some of the others that you know better as its nearly always the case; John has been giving you some news but he has it a little mixed you might hardly understand it but you may excuse him for he is always in a hurry [Page 6] They have got the Jubilee over in pretty good style the band went up to the mote and burned a good bonfire after they came from the Plum [Plumbridge?], they were pretty tired but they had a good view when they were up and it not matter so much [sic] They disagreed a little before they started to the Plum [Plumbridge?] about going to the mote but the majority was for it so they won James Campbell carried all up and gave the tar free and everything else when they agreed to go on but he would not give it for any place else so they have to say that they burned a bonfire on the mote on the Queen's Jubilee there was a good many bonfires at night but very few to leave thier [their?] work in daytime Eden people was all busy except the two McClelland's and plenty others as well [Page 7] There was a picnic at Gortin on same day the band had some notion of going there but they got no invitation so they thought they would not bother There is another picnic at Baronscourt to morrow [tomorrow?] but only for the free.masons [freemasons?] Charles McCullagh's ones is all going. they went to Gortin on Tuesday Then the [there?] will be another in Rooskey [Roosky?] on 1st July James McKnickle [McNichol?] sent us a notice but I dont think we will go He was here on the [18th?] viewing the land and trying to get into business about here so on that account he gave us word about the picnic Strabane sessions is going on today and yesterday Uncle John has John Ballantine and Moses processed for money that Bob got and they were Bail [bailed?] Archibald : has Bobs land [Page 8] sunk so he will get nothing there John (Hugh Brien) has got that many processes that he will have to sell the land, he has rid of all stock before the decree comes Alex McKelvey started to America out of the road before he was [prossed?] I think he is far down too John told you something about James McKelvey Bradkeel he was for death but I think he will recover again Duncans people has their equal this time the McKelveys was all over night and day and bought [brought?] their own meat and attended to James and he made his will to please them and left them all and from what we hear they had some rows Alice went over and defied one of them to touch her she would go in to see her sister in spite of them If he recovers they will have [hot?] living him and Annie I think he kept her in bounds anyway Good Bye [Goodbye?] at present Bella M Smyth when this letter reaches you your exam will be going on and the twelfth will be near |
