My Dear James
I recd [received?] yours of Sept 23d the other
day. I had been gathering up some seeds for you during
the summer as they became ripe, & I now send you
some by this Mail, by Book Post. Be careful in
opening the box as there are some put in loose. I marked
some samples so that you can know the loose ones by
them. I did not mark the sugar maple as you will
know it. I hope they may grow. Enclosed in this
letter you will find a Steel Engraving of your Shanty
& Clearing. You will perceive that I am not what
you would call a "Burster" at sketching, but at
the same time I think it is a pretty correct plan of the
clearing & shanty. I had not room on the paper to give
the whole extent of clearing, but it extends back about
60 yds [yards?] from the old shanty, & runs from [Pandansh?]
Lake up to the shore of the little lake. You will also
notice our friend Sah-mak-ke-tati-mah in his old birch
bark putting for the landing. I believe it is the first thing
of the sort I ever tried. I am sure Miss Cleland could
make a nice Sketch from it. You ought to get her
to do one, & I wish you would ask her to do
one for me, & you could send it by Book post,
rolled up like a sheet of music with a sheet of paste
board rolled round it to keep it from being broken. As
you remember the shape of [Pandansh?] Lake looking from
the shanty. She might give another view of the place,
taking it from the little lake & take in [Pandansh?]
Lake. Some time before I recd [received?] your letter I recd [received?] a
paper with a pamphlet inside by the Rev [Ryle], on the cover of this pamphlet
there was some writing in pencil, asking me if I liked some
book, & saying that you had recd [received?] the seeds, but the writing
was so rubbed & defaced by the rolling up of the paper & friction
that I could not make head or tail of it, but I expect from
what you say in your letter, that it must have been from Mrs
Nicholson, will you please to ask her & say that I could not
make it out. I asked a surveyor the cost of a copy of the
maps that you want. He said $10 each, or $5 for a tracing
of the map coloured - perhaps I might get it done a little
cheaper. I have not been able to go to [Pandansh?] this fall
but I have heard that the Deer are very plenty every where [everywhere?].
I recd [received?] a message from Joe to be sure & go up, I feel rather
disappointed but it cannot be helped. I sent him a parcel
of Newspapers weighing 40 lbs to keep him in reading material.
Be sure & write soon & acknowlege [acknowledge?] receipt of seeds.
Hoping that you are taking an intrest in Eternal things.
"Giving diligence to make your calling & election sure"
See 1st Peter 1st Chap [Chapter?].

Write Soon Believe me to remain
Yours ever sincerely
J. D. Collins.
