Transcript | Mr. Joseph Cook 10- [10 cents?] Mearchs [Merchants?] New Allexandria [Alexandria?], Westmoreland County, State of Pensilvenia [Pennsylvania?] America April 29th Esker Dower 1830 My dear son Joseph I reced. [Received?] yours Dated May [1st?] 1829 and we are happy in mind and heart thanks to God for his mercys [mercies?] that you are all well - I am much surprised that you should Envy God of a happy Angel to add to his Number in heaven at her happy tender age before she even Committed any sin, we are all here in good health thanks to God I am very sorry and so is your loving mother that our Dear Daughter in law Mrs. Cook has fretted her self so much and Injured her health on the Death of a young Child - I have to Inform you that your Brother James has got an increase to his Family a Daughter called Sarah and lived only one month - We ought not to be grived [grieved?] for you know well my Dear son the words of Holy god the Lord he giveth and taketh away and your Brother James is much Surprised that you have not mentioned him in your writings - I sent two letters to you last season and one of them by a Mr. Campbell which give us much pleasure to here [hear.?] that you were doing well as he said that he was in your house, there is one thing that Grieves one and also your mother about my son Wm [William?] not writing to us to give us that much pleasure how he is doing in life and business as it would please the parents here how happy their Children would do in this world and to be in hopes of their Eternal happiness and it would be a pleasure to his Friends & Neabours [neighbours?] also [written upside down and spliting page into two] ------------------------------- David Cooke all your your friends and neabours [neighbours?] Send their Kind Respects to you ------------------------------- and I hope that he will be Ruled, by you as he may look up to you as a father in that part of the globe I have to to Inform you all that our Cheif [Chief?] hopes ought to be in God as my Family here is [---d?] as the Care of God and my Advice so that we Implore the mercys [mercies?] of god to be for Ever with you All in part of the world so far from a Loveing [Loving?] Sincere Father and Mother &c &c [etc, etc?] My dear Josph [Joseph?] - there have been a man left this neabourhood [neighbourhood?] and went to New York and he and his acomplesses [accomplices?] four in no. [number?] Robbed the Mail Coach and have been hanged I will not at present give names - So my Dear children Drink and bad Company have brought many to a Shameful End; My love to my Sister Sarah Joined, by your mother and Family and her Friends are all well - your will be pleased, when this comes to hand to let me Know how John McKowen [McGown?] is for his Friends here thinks he Dead I am let you know the state of Ireland our linen trade is got so Low from [?] [?] [?] per yd. [yard?] and cattle and all things Else is brought to the lowest [Dishess?] a cow from £2=10=0 to £3=0=0 so that Farmers Cannot stand rents and the most Extra taxations Ever heard of tradesmen and Servants Beging [Begging?] for want of imployment [employment?] I send my love and Blessing Joined by your mother and your Brothers to you and Mrs Cooke and Wm [William?] Remains your Sincere and affection [affectionate?] Father to Death |
