Transcript | Rev Robt [Robert?] Gage Rathlin Island Ballycastle J & J Cook Derry April 19 1847 about Passengers to America Londonderry April 19 1847 Revd Mr Gage Sir In reply to your letter of the 16th Inst - Mrs Gage in her Letter of the 13th march states that there will be Eighty persons or thereabouts emigrating; this is the only information we have as to the number; now in your List there is above 100 - if we could take them all in one ship we would do so with pleasure - but the number going & anxious to get away this spring is so great that unless we would act unfairly towards our other friends & shut them out altogether we could not take all yours - we never engaged to take any fixed number - we never engaged to take them all in one ship in fact we never came to a point of a bargain in the matter, only as to the price which was fixed - however as our plan is not satisfactory to the people we cant [cannot?] of course hold them to a bargain and therefore if they choose not to accept it our offer we will cancel the agreement - please let me know whether we will have them or not on the terms stated - yours respectfully J & J Cook |
