Transcript | Letter of December 15, 1869 From Jemima Crosby McKay, Carrick-on-Suir, Ireland to her sister, Mary Crosby McGinity, Blairsville, Pennsylvania, USA Carrick-on-Suir Dec. 15, 1869 Dear Sister, Nephews & [and?] Nieces, I send you these few lines to let you know that dear Brother John has got his business all most satisfactory [sic] settled and he sent off the Bank order for ú150 to you on last Saturday 11th Inst. [Instant?] I hope you have received it all safe and he is gone off himself this morning by the early train up to Cork & [and?] into Queenstown to meet the mail steamer called the "City of Washington" which is to sail off on Friday 17th and is with our good God's assistance to make her journey in seven days & [and?] four hours & [and?] as he did make up his mind to go home would not stop for Christmas. I made up my mind to let him go & [and?] I would not let him go on any other ship but that same "City of Washington. We heard such a great account of the safety of that ship that it encouraged to let him go hoping and trusting in our good God that he will arrive home safe and in time to spend a happy Christmas in that happy home with his good sister and family that he praises so much and O what delight it gave us to see him so much improved in every way body & [and?] mind, intellect, hearing & [and?] all and above all seemingly taking a thought of his precious soul, and O dear sister what a lucky time he arrived here, he came here on Monday 29th of November and there happened to be one of the holy Oblate fathers come here on the following Wednesday sat 1st of Dec. [December?] and the grandest sermons & instructions that ever come from the lips of the holy anointed minister of God he gave them night and morning to us up to the following Monday 6th Dec. [December?] and I may say we left all business one side to attend to the blessed sermons and uncle John present at all of them in a seat quite convenient to the priest in the pulpit where he heard every word of it as plain as any of us. May the almighty God give him and us all grace to profit by such grand blessed instructions and I trust that he will never forget the grand sermons and instructions and that it may be the cause of him beginning a new life when he gets home. The only thing that troubled me was that I did not get him to go to confession, but dear sister lose no time in getting him forward to confession and have him well prepared to receive holy communion in a holy happy state and then he will receive spiritual grace to spend a holy and happy life during the remainder of his days and I can plainly see by my dear brother that he is well inclined to do that. Now Mary send word all about his beautiful place as we are also uneasy to know, and there is one obligation I am going to leave on you to not allow either yourself or your dear brother, John, turn out that man called Barney Hanna out of his little home if you buy the land that his place is on, for blessed is the merciful for they shall obtain mercy from our heavenly Father and as we do unto others so will our heavenly Father do unto us, and I tell you all one and all of you do good to them that injures you or tries to injure you & heap blessings on yourselves for time & [and?] eternity by doing so now. May God in heaven bless you all and give you all grace to make a preparation for a long eternity that will never end is the prayer of your beloved sister, J [Jemima?] McKay |
