Transcript | My dear Simms/_New York 30th Augt [August?] 1805 I shou'd have to accuse myself of Inattention and Ingratitude if I took the step I am about to take without apprizing you of the motives that lead to it. Finding, that my Exertions in N York scarcely suffice to preserve one from difficulties; I have determined to accept the offer of a friend to try what I shall be able to effect in the Missisippi Territory near the Natchez. - there, my friend informs me there can be no doubt of my acquiring a Competency, and he has pledg- ed [pledged?] himself to promote my Interest as far as in his power __he resides in that Country, and is very Wealthy. Should you favour one with the renewal of your Correspondence, I will be more careful that it shall hereafter suffer no interruption thro' [through?] me; _ in truth I wou'd have answered your last, but from its tenor I did imagine to have been gratified with the pleasure of your Sociey in this City ere [before?] this:- however I am now about departing for a Country between two and three thousand miles distant, and if any remarks on the Territories I shall pass thro', [through?] or on the manners of the Inhabitants among whom I am preparing to reside, will be acceptable, it will give me great pleasure to contribute in any degree, to your gratification. You have heard, doubtless, of Emmet's arrival here, also McNevin's _ the former will make fortune. Mr. Robt. [Robert?] Simms Merch. [Merchant?] Belfast |
