Transcript | To: Saml. [Samuel?] Cupples, Brickloughland, [Loughbrickland?] Ireland From: J.G.Cupples, Boston September 18, 1905. Dear Sir, Catching your name in a Belfast printed Directory of recent date moves me to drop you a line inasmuch as my surname matches yours, the same exceedingly uncommon in these latitudes. It would please me to get a line from you and learn whatever you know about our name, i.e. when it took root in your vicinity, whether it is Welsh, Scotch, England, or Irish, what might have been its early signification [significance?] and how far it has advanced in numerical importance in your island? I come down from a Rev. [Reverend?] Wm. [William?] Cupples, Born 1688, probably in Ulster, who left Ireland certainly as far back as 1700. Within a short time a Dublin gentleman of antiquarian tastes has sent me, among others, copies of the following old Down and Armagh wills on file in his City, viz. (1) Thomas Cupples, Farmer, Scarva, died 1715. Children: Alexander, William Edward, Anne, Eleanor. (2) William Cupples, Farmer, Mullahead, Tandregee, [Tanderagee?] 1788. Children: Rev. [Reverend?] Snowden Cupples, Lisburn, died 1835. Dr. Thos. [Thomas?] Cupples, Newry, died 1801. (3) Dr. Thos. [Thomas?] Cupples, Newry, 1801. (4) George Pepper Cupples, Mullahead, died unmarried 1844 (son of Dr. Cupples of Newry). (5) James Cupples of Brickland, [Loughbrickland?] 1820 This last names brothers John, James, and Alexander, Jane his niece, John a nephew, Alexander a nephew and a grandson James. The (1) name of Scarva might have been born as early as 1650, thus showing how very far back the name is traceable in your vicinity for I take Scarva to be part of Brickloughland [Loughbrickland?] Curiously, I have too the will of a captain Alexander Cupples, marioner [mariner?] of Bristol "who died unmarried in 1734, the same only Cupples will, as I am told, on file in England. He was the eldest son of the Scarva man, apparently in the Bristol slave business, plying vessels between that place and the West Indies. His property he leaves to his brother William, probably the Mullahead man, to his sister Eleanor, to his brother Edward #100 only. The British Museum Library at London owns a long letter in the handwriting of this Captain Alexander Cupples, dated 1728, Kingston, Jamaica. Perhaps all these names may be known to you. In view of my interest in the annals of the name, would you mind helping me to get more old Cupples matter. What I should like to secure would be copies of the family registers of births, deaths etc. to be found in any Cupples bible still in existence and known to you. Also copies of tombstone inscriptions recording past Cuppleses to be seen, say, in your parish church graveyard. Trusting to have the pleasure of hearing from you. I am, Very truly yours, J. G. Cupples Mr Saml. [Samuel?] Cupples, Brickloughland, [Loughbrickland?] Ireland. |
