Transcript | : [Castle?] Dobbs Dr [Dear?] Sir I have your favour of the 29th Jan & talk from Cape Fear this week but your letters in June from New Beaver and of others from Cape Fear with the receipts for my Quot rents on Black River never came to hand and find my letter from London to you last spring never came to [eye?]. I'm glad to find that Mr McCulla and you have at last letters and that the patents are [fallen?] from my lands which you expected to receive from him at New Beaver the present Seat of Government which is more convenient than [Edenton?] for the Southern Settlements. I'm pleased able to hear that my lands are fixd upon Pedee in the King's division as I may expect them Clean of Quit - Rent for ten years from the felling the patent which if they had fallen in Lord Granville's division I found he would not agree to. Let me know if there is any doubt in Carolina of my having them Clean from Quit rent for the first 10 years from the [Balling?] the Patents for if there should I would apply to your cousin in England to have it out of Doubt- When I go for London which I hope I shall do next autumn upon the return of our ships gone to find out the N:W: [North-West?] Passage which have been out a year and expect to hear of their Return with success by next aug: [August?] or [September?]- I hope the Lands allotted to me are good as they are upon Pedee, your farmers bill having mentioned those lands to be good- and expect that Mr McCulla will have them properly Surveyed in Baronies of 12000 acres Each I having paid him 250 for that purpose over and above the Purchase. I am glad to find they are near the Indian Path, (are they above or below [Cataubas?] Town) and I suppose by yrs [yours?] that the Virginia planters have settled within 20 miles of it by planting Southerly from Virginia, Is the Rocky on Johnston River a branch of Pedee on Cape Fear River, are there plantations there which are within 6 miles of it from the Planters on the NW [North-West?] Branch of Cape Fear in from [Wynyan?] or Pedee- I should be glad to know if you have got any yet to settle on my land on the Black River, and am pleased to hear that you expect to have some Planters soon upon my Pedee lands, and shall be extreamly [extremely?] obliged to you for your care in it as I have hitherto been in the trouble you have already taken in it. I have reason to believe that this Campaign will bring about a Peace with France and Spain before next Spring and if so we shall get Several from hence to go to Carolina to settle as my situation is changed since I last wrote to you by the death of my wife, and thus I hope in a little Time to give up my agency to L:C: as I have disposed of my part of Surveys [gentle?] I may have some leisure upon my hands, as my children are grown up, my eldest son will be of age in about a year, and my other son for whom I Design my Carolina Purchase is in the army, so that I may have Time if my health continues to take a trip to Carolina and take over- some families with me and look out to settle them there and see the country which I should rather chaare [care?] to do than go to the south of France, but this will depend principally upon the percentage profit you will give me from the good work of the land and henceforth it may be to me settling it there Quakers and which kind of Antificers and servants I should take with me as [was?] wanted there, such as carpenters Smiths Malons & Coopers and what numbers would he propose at first as could be accommodated with Provisions and necessaries to form a Settlement and what kind of goods and tools as I should take over with them for I think if I could take a trip and fix several it would find me many more to go from home and help to populate that Colony - if you fix any Planters let me know upon what terms, as to the rents and proportion of the Produce and for what Term, and if I agree with any here who can transport themselves upon which terms & should agree with each family the numbers of acres Term kind of produce, that I may know how to conduct myself in any Bargains I shall make and as so many letters miscarry send duplicates by the post and private - ships, your Bross [brother?] Rowan [resides?] with his family near me at Carrickfergus they are all well- |
