Donegal 28.2.98 My dear Bella You will say "my promises are like pie crusts made to be broken. and no wonder it is a shame for me never to have written to thank you for your nice card. I was very sorry to hear of Willie s illness but I am sure by this time he is as hearty as ever. and able to knock about at his work as usual. I am sure Andy Ballantine will think himself no end of a man to have given such a price for his farm. but I suppose his brothers paid it for him. Did you go to the concert In Wee Sams [Sam s?] barn? I suppose you did though be sure & tell me how you all got on. When did you hear anything from James I am sure he is studying very hard for his exam in July. The time does go round quickly Just fancy it three months since I left it seems like yesterday. I am sure the people have settled down now to the old routine and have forgotten all about us. Are Mary & John Charles still at home. It is a shame to keep them specially Mary I hope John does not go too often to see Lillie he might begin to take the work out of your hands if he got too many lessons. Tell Willie to take care going across the burn for fear (sic) Andy would not be there to save him and he might get drowned. No more marriages since Bella Houstons? I wonder she did not put you all in a way of working. I never heard how they got on at the exam. but I am sure it was only very middling they forget so fast if they are not kept well at their work. Is Miss Dunn's over yet? Remember me to them all when you see them. I have not heard of Any of you being down in Grange yet. There are so many of you that one or two would not be missed from church on Sunday. But if one or two of our folks were away there would be no one to represent the family. It wont [won t?] be very long to Easter now. I do not know whether I will give long holidays or not I will see what sort of weather there will be at that time. If it were like this it would not be very inviting How is Liza keeping, Do her chilblains bother her this winter. I hope she did not hurt her toe at Moses Ballantine's like she did at the quilting. Is Tom still fond of Fair haired girls or has he got over his liking for that style. I used to have great fun going up to your house then your mother & father were so good to us. I often wonder they did not throw us out we kicked up such a row many a time. How is Willie John, Has he gone over to his father's yet. Do you ever go still hunting now. Such an escapade. if we had been caught what would have happened. We caused a nine days wonder anyhow. I must finish up now with best love to your mother father Willie Tom Liza John Mary & Willie John & last but not least your own sweet self. Remember me to all enquiring friends and write me all the news very soon. Your loving friend Minnie [written across page] Were you ever in Omagh since, Hadn't we a real day. I forgot to ask if Liza s flower lived. What about your Cousin in India, do you hear regularly from him. Remember me to your uncle James & Charlie also Mrs Charlie but you neednt [needn t?] mind the other lady she is not my style. Transcribed by Greg Floyd |
