Eden Feb 8, 1898 Dear Cousin James In answer to your most kind and welcome letter which I received all right [alright?] you must excuse me for not writing sooner but I did not want to write till after the binch [bench?] till I would tell you what did happen it was the greatest day ever was seen in Gortin the case with Alexd [Alexander?] Reid will be a big one yet it is left of [off?] to be tried in omagh in March the [there?]were (sic) grate [great?] swearing Jamey Hay was Alex (sic) witness and Willie Noble was Reids [Reid's?] witness Jamey Hay did good work for Alex but you may think Noble [swore?] right [or?] rong [wrong?] the losing man will pay a bill at the end If it goes as far as McConnels case went the [there?] will be a fue [few?] pounds spent the [there?] are (sic) nothing consumes the money like the law your father & Joney Elkin was bales [bail?] men for Alexd [Alexander?] Knox so you may be thinking of them going to Derry gale [gaol?] about the tenth of March the [they?] are working very hard now Alex is ploughing very hard Knox and Jamey Hay is working with the spade every day we are all busy thank god for our health you wanted to know if the [there?] were any balls or soirees I must tell you the [there?] were none we had a grand lecture in the meeting house last week but Mary McConnel is married on (sic) a brother of Joney Caughrons he is going to die since the wedding he got such a feed of a tale [tail?] of a herring.
