Transcript | Government House. Ottawa. 26th Feb [1894?] My dear Mama. I got your letter with some of the family news yesterday. I did not know Freddy was at Multra - a very lucky change from Lialkot. I conclude the II are there. I do not understand about the work for Basil in Belfast but suppose it to be "Professional" I see you were at the drawing room so hope there was no further spread of measles - I wrote you a line to tell you I had been in Montreal and had a very gay time. I met one or two girls who asked after Muriel who I described as being much taller than they and even more beautiful if it were possible. The curler's are the people who are always genuinely delighted to hear of Papa - particulary the older scotchmen who belong to such rinks as the Caledonian. 8 of them were up here this week and won the Governor General's prize - my club (the Ridlean) played against them in the final I think in a year or two ski-ing will be one of the great sports here - all the young people are taking to it and on Sundays & Saturdays large parties go out. I think snowshoes will become a relic of the past. This is the only place where any tobogganing is done unless there is a little in Quebec. Government House is much the same as two years ago. They say the Aberdeens have spent tons of money entertaining but I am afraid they have been a great failure socially - I think one reason is that their staff is not strong enough. People are already wondering who the successor is to be. I shall leave this in a few days and go down to New York where I stay about a week with some people of the name of Sloane, so please do not write any more. I hope to find you in London. I remain my dear Mama Yours affectly [affectionately?] Archie. |
