Transcript | Alexander Demers, Dealer in General Merchandise. Special Trader in Hay, Grain, Horses and Cattle. St. Ignatius, Mont. [Montreal?], 2nd Sept [1894?] My dear Mama, I am at an Indian mission station where there is a church, school, dry goods store, two lots of nuns one Irish & the other french & some Italian priests with a [lazy?] I. The owner of this store Mr Demers is a french Canadian who has often seen His Ex. [Excellency?] at Montreal and was at one banquet given to him. When he found out who I was he asked me over to his home & was much pleased to hear of you. He has what they call "Kept track of you" since 78 & knew all the places you had been to since. The mission is at the foot of the main range of the Rockies & we start in this morning. I have engaged one more man a half breed so that our number now is four. I am very lucky in the hunter I have got as he is fond of the work himself & does not only do it for the dollars. He is also very amusing at times & has had thirty years experience amongst the Indians & this western country, so has lots to talk about. The cook is a bore & takes half an hour to say anything he has got to say but he packs well & is a good man about camp. I hear it is already freezing on the top of the divide so we shall have it pretty cold. I stopped my [----?] at Drexel & Morgan so any letter you have written I shall find there on my return. Please write again on about 20th October. The last week I have been across the Indian territory & was glad to have done with it. I shall go back by train which is only 10 miles from here. I hope you & father are both well. I remain my dear Mama yours affectly [affectionately?] Archie. |
