Transcript | Murder of Empress of Austria C.P.R. 12th September [1898?] My dear Mama We reach Winnipeg this evening where I will post this scrawl - I changed my mind & came all the way by train from Toronto. I called on the Kirkpatricks. I am afraid he is dying of cancer. I only saw Ly [Lady?] Kirkpatrick. Sir Oliver Mowatt is now the Lt [Lieutenant?] and stayed at the Queens Hotel - a scotchman of the name of McGow owns it and was established there when you were in Toronto. He has been a great curler and [beat?] sailor. One day I went to Niagara with a small & select party - we went on board the ["O--corce?"] your old steamer of Lake Superior. New boats have been built that are larger but they say she is as steady as any of them. The American side of Niagara has been much built over but the Canadian side is well kept. I wired to Mr F. Baker at Winnipeg but now hear he is away in Montreal. We get an hour there but perhaps his brother will meet me. I hear Mr MacIntosh is at Victoria - & I have wired to him - I may go stay through to the coast before going to Rossland as it is a short journey. I wish it had been the 17th RIY who got the chance in Egypt. The papers here & in the states are full of praise for England - nothing like success to get respected. Lucky young Churchill was attached I believe - I'm sorry Herbert Howard got bowled over & I know Basil will be sorry. I wish they would lynch the man who murdered the Empress they would not be long about it in America. I have seen one cable saying the French were in possession of the [lepper?] Nile and am wondering if it is true. I think it would be best to address letters to c/o Drescal & Hoyan Bankers New York as I can get them to forward. Hoping you are all well I remain my dear mama Yours affectly [affectionately?] Archie |
