Transcript | Hootenay Lake B.C. [British Columbia?] 11th October [1898?] My dear Mama. We are (I and a long Scotchman by name Feddes, a mining engineer) waiting for a construction car at one end of the new railway line to take us to the other end, about 280 miles - Luckily Sir W. Van Home is expected or chances could be rather small for some time. I believe there are wonderful coal fields near the [----?] next pass that will considerably cheapen living in B.C. [B ritish Columbia?] We have been lucky enough to find one of the engineers of the line and are staying in his house till we can get on. The scotchman is very scotch and very slow in his movements How he is going to get through the programme I do not know. 1. Examine a silver mine at [M---?] 2. Examine a coalfields 3. have a bath & change clothes at Ottawa where our buffalo has gone 4. See a new mining drill at Montreal 5. Go to Quebec because I tell him to 6. Go Toronto to see the falls 7. Go to Buffalo to travel by Empire Express 8. New York to see the town 9. Philadelphia to see the daughters of a man he met on the train 10. To sail on 26th inst. I have not heard from you for a long time. In fact only one letter as my moverments were uncertain & I wired to Drescel & Morgan to keep my mail which I will find at Ottawa. I believe the Aberdeens sail on the 18 or 19th Nov. The Mintors will have a difficult job to arrange their garden party lists etc. as the Aberdeens have let in everyone. We have just received the full account of the battle of [----man?] a number of my friends were in it & a good many with the 21st. I am expecting a cable from you about the date of the shoot as I do not suppose I shall get over much before. I remain my dear mama Yours affectly [affectionately?] Archie If Bond is with you I will write a week before I sail so that he can meet me in London. I hope the pheasants are doing well. I meant to ask you to present my ladies golf prize to the winner at [C----lea?] but I forgot. I hope they asked you from the club. I was surprised to hear of John Harrison's appointment at Dublin but I am afraid his health will not allow him to do much. |
